About the Roadwork and Realignment at Michigan Avenue and C Drive

To improve safety and traffic flow to accommodate the future growth of the Marshall Area Jobs, Opportunity and Recreation (MAJOR) Campus, Michigan Avenue and C Drive are undergoing an important realignment by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

These changes are needed to:

  • Increase safety on our local roadways because:
    • the realignment creates the most direct access between Interstate 69 and the MAJOR Campus. Trucks and employees can travel from I-69 and directly to the campus without any additional turns, which reduces the risk of crashes.
    • the boulevard design creates right-in/right-out drives, reducing the potential for angle and head-on/left turn crashes. Head-on/left turn crashes are more likely to injure or kill motorists than most other crashes.
    • traffic speeds on the portion of old Michigan Ave being re-routed will be reduced in front of residences.
  • Lower costs because additional properties won’t have to be purchased with the planned realignment, allowing for the best, most fiscally responsible use of taxpayer dollars.
  • Boost conservation and preservation efforts because the realignment minimizes the impact on Bear Creek Farms, which we hope to repurpose into a living museum and nature center. Our vision is that it will be open to the public for activities, educational opportunities and recreation.
