Reports of a diesel fuel leak during construction at the Marshall Area Jobs, Opportunities, and Recreation Campus (MAJOR) are false.

As part of the efforts to develop and prepare the site, contamination caused by previous owners or tenants of the property is remediated by the construction team as required. In this case, a leak from an above-ground diesel fuel tank used as part of a previous heavy farming operation was discovered. When the construction team found the leak, the construction team on site did appropriate remediation work to remove impacted soil.

Reports that the potential future location of a new Marshall Township fire station is unsafe for use as a facility for firefighters and their life-saving equipment are also false.

In the past, the fire station’s future site has been used for commercial purposes, including as an automobile repair shop.  The site does not currently pose an exposure risk for construction or redevelopment activities, or for the future use of the site as a fire station (for nonresidential use).  If signs of contamination are discovered during construction activities, the Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance will evaluate and correct any issues at no cost to the Township to ensure compliance with health, safety and welfare standards under the law, and to ensure our firefighters have a safe working environment.
