MARSHALL, Mich. — Development of the Marshall Megasite took a critical step forward today as the Marshall Township Board of Trustees voted for property transfers that will help pave the way for the development, which is projected to bring 2,000-3,000 high-paying manufacturing jobs to the area.

“We are thankful to the Marshall Township Board for approving this important step toward a once-in-a-generation economic opportunity that will create thousands of jobs in our community and spark investment in this region and beyond,” said James Durian, CEO of the Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance (MAEDA). “We appreciate the strong support for this effort we received from a variety of stakeholders. A large local coalition is excited to see movement on this project because it means securing a bright economic future across southwest Michigan.”

Support for the development of the megasite poured in this week as key business owners, elected officials and others called on the board to approve the property transfer needed to keep the project moving. Local leaders and area residents submitted dozens of letters in support of the steps needed to keep the project on track.

Billy Beers, president and CEO of the Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, wrote to the township about the major economic benefits a development would provide.

Such a development will “stimulate massive economic growth in our region by providing high-quality, good paying jobs with fringe benefits for thousands, boosting property values and generating new tax revenues,” Beers wrote. “Studies of similar investments in Michigan and other states have shown that these megasite development opportunities generate billions of dollars of new personal income from the direct, indirect and induced jobs being created over a 20-year timeframe.”

Dr. Paul Watson II, president of Kellogg Community College, wrote that the college is excited about the opportunity to partner with a manufacturer entering the region that will enhance the readiness of the local workforce.

“Kellogg Community College is monitoring the potential development of the Marshall Megasite and remains ready to provide workforce-specific training, technical expertise, professional certification preparation and customizable academic degree pathways to anyone who needs such opportunities today and, in the future,” Watson wrote.

“This project is a win-win for everyone,” wrote Kelli Scott, Calhoun County administrator. “It will create economic opportunities while preserving our community’s unique characteristics. This kind of opportunity does not come along often, and it is critical our area officials do everything they can to make sure it happens here.”
