Marshall Township Board approves plans for new fire station

The Marshall Township Board of Trustees has approved a plan to build a new fire station that will create more training space for firefighters, add more bays for fire trucks and provide additional storage for life-saving equipment.

The new Fire Station 1 in Marshall Township will be built at 13550 15 Mile Road, across the street from its current location. The move will allow the land where the current station is located to become part of the Marshall Area Jobs, Opportunities, and Recreation Campus (MAJOR), home to Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park Michigan and other future businesses.

Marshall Township trustees, who are committed to being good stewards of taxpayer money, voted unanimously to approve plans for the new facility at their meeting on Thursday. Trustees noted that state funding – not local tax dollars – will cover the costs of building the new station.

“The opportunity to create a new station for our hard-working firefighters and have those costs covered by the state is a win-win for our community,” said Jeff Albaugh, clerk of the Marshall Township Board. “We are excited to move forward on a facility that will continue to provide our constituents with high-quality public safety resources that allow our firefighters to quickly respond to emergencies.”

Marshall Township firefighters respond to an average of 200 calls per year. With the new station being located across the street from the current station, firefighters will still be able to quickly respond to emergencies. The township has two pumpers and two tankers and other response apparatus located in two stations — an additional bay at the new station will allow for new equipment to be added.

The new station is expected to be finished in late 2024 or early 2025 and fire station operations won’t leave the old building until the new one is ready for occupancy.
