Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Expansion: Project 6: Sanitary Sewer Force Main

2.5 miles of 18-inch sanitary sewer force main

The Sanitary Sewer Force Main is a 2.5-mile long, 18-inch pressurized pipeline beginning at the Marshall Facilities Site near Michigan Avenue and 15 Mile Road.

This pipeline conveys MAJOR campus wastewater received at the Sanitary Pump Station (Project #5) to a receiving structure at the City of Marshall Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) on Industrial Road.

The wastewater force main will be installed by conventional open cut, jack and bore, and Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) techniques. HDD will be utilized to cross under the I-69/ Michigan Avenue Interchange and Bear Creek, while jack and bore will be used to cross under the railroad. HDD is a trenchless method of installing underground utilities that causes minimal surface disruption.

HDD minimizes the impact of construction activities on the local environment and surrounding community, including residents and businesses, and is commonly used to cross sensitive natural features such as rivers and streams or challenging obstacles like interstate highways.
