A Lover’s Salad

Many a romantic meal has been enjoyed at Schuler’s Restaurant & Pub in historic downtown over the past 100-plus years. Couples on first dates, marriage proposals, weddings and anniversaries celebrated over decadent meals, desserts and cocktails.

Second-generation owner Win Schuler himself was regarded as a hopeless romantic. It is said that if he noticed a couple enjoying a romantic evening together in the dining room, he would often duck back into the kitchen to create a “Lovers’ Salad” and deliver the plate himself to the table with a wink—pointing out that the salad was “only good for a few hours!”

According to page 38 of Schuler’s Fresh & Warm Memories (Huron River Press, 2004), The “Lovers’ Salad,” received particular attention from customers and the staff alike. “Never served to unescorted men,” said one menu notation. “Only good for four hours,” advertised another. One guest was even said to have placed a sign on his hotel room door saying “Do not disturb; I’ve just had a Lovers’ Salad at Win Schuler’s.”

When asked about the unique taste of the salad—a mixture of greens, bacon, toasted almonds, sliced mushroom caps, and other garnishes with a house-made sweet and sour dressing—Win explained facetiously, “I put my heart into it.”

Today the Lovers’ Salad is still available by request and on special occasions, such as Valentine’s Day. View this upcoming holiday menu, and be sure to call for a reservation (269-781-0600). The Valentine’s Day Menu will be served Saturday, February 13th, and Sunday, February 14th from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm. A variety of sparkling wine and cocktail specials will also be offered.
