The Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance (MAEDA)/Choose Marshall held a ribbon cutting to welcome The Wilderness Maven Apothecary as a new chamber member.

Store owner, Jenn Ziegler-Sherman, recently opened The Wilderness Maven Herbal Apothecary, a health and wellness store in downtown Marshall, and is ready to serve customers’ herbal needs. Every product in The Wilderness Maven Herbal Apothecary is made with plants that have been sustainably harvested from the wild or grown organically. This practice ensures that the plant medicines are made from potent raw materials, and that the plants used will continue to flourish for generations to come. Ziegler-Sherman commented, “We seek to transform raw botanicals into clean and simple products that support the health and wellness of our community and planet.”  She added, “We strive to offer a safe space to find healing the way nature intended. Earth medicine is ancient, powerful, and capable.”

Ziegler, a certified herbalist, started her company in Portland, Oregon in 2014 with a small line of salves.  She decided she wanted to not only make medicine from plants but also wanted to grow as much of it as possible from seed to harvest. She and her husband Zach moved from Oregon to Michigan last fall and purchased a 17-acre farm.   “We practice no-till farming, pest control with beneficial insects, no spray, and biodynamic principles. Knowing we have the cleanest and healthiest plant that was handled with intention for its entire life cycle makes the best medicine.  We plan to make this land our home, our garden, our passion, and our livelihood, and tend to it with intention for the future.”

Ziegler-Sherman is excited to open a brick-and-mortar store in historic downtown Marshall, “Every person has been so welcoming to us with their time, knowledge, and resources.  We hope to educate our customers and give them the confidence they need to comfortably work with herbs and learn how they can benefit from their use.”

The apothecary also offers custom herbal sodas at its build your own herbal tea and tonic bar. These flavorful beverages are made with all natural ingredients and help address common health issues such as immunity deficiencies, inflammation, and allergies.  Customers will also find a wide selection of functional tea blends, bulk herbs, elixirs, herbal tinctures, body and facial care products, and unique home goods.  Ziegler-Sherman also hopes to offer classes in the future.
